Midwest bettors can enjoy Diamond Jo casinos at two locations in Iowa.
One is along the Mississippi River in Dubuque. The second is in Worth County, near the Iowa-Minnesota border.
Boyd Gaming, of Las Vegas, owns both of the casinos. They are land-based casinos; the Dubuque venue complex expanded its three-story riverboat in 2008.
Recent legal changes have allowed Iowa casinos to offer sports betting. Diamond Jo is teaming up with FanDuel and MGM, two major sports betting brands, to bring retail and online/mobile betting to the Hawkeye State.
This page covers all you need to know to get the best from the two Diamond Jo casinos. We examine its retail and future online sportsbooks. Finally, we discuss Damond Jo’s casino games and slots, along with entertainment options and the rich history of these venues.
Sports betting at Diamond Jo Casinos
Both venues have retail sportsbooks under the FanDuel name.
At the Dubuque casino, you’ll find the 2,150-square-foot sportsbook close to the south entrance.
At the Worth County venue, there is a slightly smaller venue, which is between the cashier’s cage and the Big Wheel bar.
These books offer a mix of self-serve betting and betting windows. There are walls of HD TVs, which show various pro and college sports. There are also sports tickers to keep you up to date with the results.
While FanDuel built its reputation on daily fantasy sports contests, you’ll be able to place regular wagers at the Diamond Jo Casinos.
These include singles bets (moneyline, totals), spreads, parlays and round robins, as well as many sport-specific bets. The books offer all the primary sports, including soccer, golf and motorsports.
The Dubuque venue hosts two bars/restaurants: The Filament and The Game. Opening hours are as follows:
- Mondays: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 2-10 p.m.
- Thursdays: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Fridays: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Saturdays and Sundays: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Online betting with Diamond Jo Casinos
Each Iowa casino can license two mobile sportsbooks for online betting. Diamond Jo casinos are working with FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM Sportsbook to ensure the online ventures are a success.
You can download the sports betting apps or bet via the websites as long as you are at least 21 years or older and within state lines. First, you must complete registration at one of the two live venues.
Based on its books in other states, FanDuel Iowa will offer some excellent incentives to new players, which includes:
- Risk-free first bet.
- Free bets for registering.
- Enhanced odds bonuses and parlay insurance.
MGM Sportsbook operates in New Jersey, as well. We anticipate the MGM Iowa book to offer a combination of free bets and matched deposit bonuses.
While the 2019 law change in Iowa does include provision for daily fantasy sports, traditional sports betting will be the big draw at FanDuel. You will be able to live bet (while matches are underway) and have access to a vast range of match bets, props, futures and specials.
Casino table games, slots at Diamond Jo Casinos
These are midsized casinos compared to those elsewhere, with between 775-995 slots, keno, video poker terminals and 20-plus table games.

Promotions for players at Diamond Jo Casinos
These casinos are part of the Boyd Gaming network around the country, and they share a loyalty scheme called BConnected.
When you sign up, it tracks your play on slots and table games. You can tailor your promotions to your preferences (and your level of play). These include comps, free play, hotel and dining promotions.
Diamond Jo casinos have a lot of promotions that continually change, as well as regular daily specials.
These include free play on slots each Wednesday afternoon, birthday bonuses and a bad beat jackpot in the poker room.
Examples of one-off promotions include free dining for just an hour of play, and “Young at Heart” benefits on Thursdays. There are also drawings and blackjack tournaments for regular gamblers.

History of Diamond Jo Casinos in Iowa
The riverboat casino at Dubuque was the first of the two Diamond Jo casinos. It began in 1994, at a time when casinos were required to cruise during the summer season. Later, this three-story boat would become stationary, which allowed today’s complex to be built around it.
Diamond Jo in Worth County opened in 2006, and was initially designed as a club, retreat and hunting area for pheasants, grouse and deer. There is a golf club on the site, which is for high-rollers only. Also, there is a Holiday Inn, which opened in 2011.
Are the sportsbooks and casinos at Diamond Jo legal?
Yes, existing casino legalization in 1990 gave the original license to the Dubuque Diamond Jo casino. Expanded legislation in 2007 allowed the riverboat trips from April to October to stop.
The new sportsbooks and upcoming mobile apps come from more recent legislation. In 2019, Act SF 617 regulated sports betting in Iowa. Each live casino can apply for up to two licenses for mobile sportsbooks, and open a retail sportsbook, too. There is no provision for online casino gambling for real money on the books.
To gamble in an Iowa casino, you must be at least 21 years old and not on the statewide, self-exclusion list.

Diamond Jo Casino Buffet Dubuque Iowa
Played at Diamond Jo Casino, Dubuque, Iowa, 10/26/2017. The place is clean, smoking allowed but no smoke smell, great ventilation. Anti-smokers take that and shove it where the sun does not shine!
The staff was very courteous and professional. We got our players cards and no perks, excepting after getting 100 points you get a free buffet. The buffet food was better than high school fare, and overall had taste and character. I attempted to play Video poker but the hits on Deuces wild ended up being three of a kinds a lot and quite a lot of throw away blank hands. There is a sign hanging on the wall by the large cashiers cage that states todays payout. It was 90.5% on this day. I moved from VP to slots and with my wife and I playing various machines over a period of 6.5 hours between us we donated 420.00. Not too bad from an entertainment stance but from a gamers viewpoint, well, at least mine, we had fun but the slots are tighter than Toby's derrière. There are a lot of older and some newer machines and it was fun to play some of the oldies. The website for the casino has a search area and you can get a general idea of what they have. I would not recommend this casino for those who think they are going to win small or big. Sure, it happens once in a while but me, I will stick to Vegas and Reno for a better chance of collecting some money.
